This will be a short article explaining how to fix the “SIGN IN REQUIRED We can’t upload or download your changes because your cached credentials have expired” error, which can be generated by any Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc when attempting to download, view or update files located in shared areas such as SharePoint or OneDrive.

Example showing the error presented in PowerPoint

The Solution

Follow the steps below to remove the cached credentials –

  1. Close all office programs.
  2. Open the Windows Start menu.
  3. Search “Credential Manager” and select the result.
  4. Click Windows Credentials.
  5. Under Generic Credentials, remove all the log-in credentials.
  6. Restart your computer.
  7. Launch the office application again and sign in if required.

Have no idea what this means . . . Under Generic Credentials, remove all the log-in credentials.

Or copy-paste the text from the open document and paste the data onto a notepad app or similar…then follow the above instructions to avoid losing your data.

This solution does not work. How am I supposed to save my 10 pages I have typed up on Word by closing out all office programs?

You could potentially save locally then overwrite the remote files once the problem is resolved. Otherwise it is what it is
